What Is a Shoring Jack?

A shoring jack (also called an adjustable steel prop, acrow prop, or telescopic support) is a vertical steel support used during construction to temporarily hold up formwork, slabs, beams, or existing structural elements while permanent supports are being built, replaced, or cured.

Think of it as the temporary column that takes the load while your permanent structure isn’t ready to carry it yet. Once your concrete has cured or your structural repairs are complete, the shoring jacks come down.

Common uses in Philippine construction:

  • Supporting formwork while concrete slabs cure (pangtukod sa slab)
  • Temporarily holding beams or ceiling structures during renovation
  • Supporting existing floors while columns or walls below are being repaired or replaced
  • Re-shoring during multi-storey slab construction

Which size do you need?

Size Extension Range Best For
Standard (3.10m)
Up to 3.10m
Standard residential ceiling height (2.7–3m)
Standard (3.80m)
Up to 3.80m
Higher ceilings, second-floor slab work
Heavy Duty
Up to 4.80m
Commercial buildings, thick slabs, heavy loads

In Philippine house construction, the 3.10m and 3.80m sizes are the most practical since average ceiling heights run around 3 meters under the National Building Code. If your project involves higher floors or thicker slabs, the heavy-duty option handles the additional load requirement.

How Many Shoring Jack Do you Need?

A widely used rule of thumb in Philippine construction: 1 shoring jack per square meter of slab area being supported. So for a 20 sqm room slab, you’d typically need approximately 20 pieces as a starting point, your structural engineer or contractor may adjust this based on slab thickness, load, and span.

For renovation work involving beam or ceiling support rather than a full slab pour, the number depends on your specific structural setup, it’s worth describing your project when requesting a quote so we can help you estimate accurately.

Why Rent Instead of Buy?

Shoring jacks are only in use for the duration of your slab curing or structural repair and typically just a few weeks. After that, they’re idle equipment that needs storage and maintenance. At ₱250/piece per month, renting is almost always more practical than buying for a one-time or occasional project. For a full cost comparison, see our scaffolding rental vs. buying guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent shoring jacks without a contractor?

Yes. Many homeowners rent shoring jacks directly for renovation work. That said, shoring for structural repairs especially anything involving beams, columns, or load-bearing walls, is worth consulting a licensed engineer on before work begins, since shoring placement affects structural safety in ways that go beyond general construction knowledge.

What length are your GI pipes?
Our standard GI pipes are 1.5m, 3m, and 6 meters in length.
How long do I need to keep shoring jacks in place?

For concrete slab work, shoring typically stays in place until the slab reaches sufficient curing strength, commonly 7–28 days depending on concrete mix, weather conditions, and slab thickness. Your structural engineer or contractor can confirm the right timeline for your specific pour.

Do you rent formwork boards or other slab components?
We offer shoring jacks alongside our full scaffolding product range: H-frame sets, platform boards, and GI pipe. Contact us to discuss what your project needs and we’ll confirm availability.
